Jets vs. Lions: Final Week 1 injury and weather report

The Jets rookie quarterback threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 16-of-21 passing, Darron Lee had two of the Jets' five interceptions (including a pick-six) and Andre Roberts returned a punt for a touchdown as NY scored 31 unanswered points in a 48-17 win over the Detriot Lions 41-17 on Monday at Ford Field. If a textbook example ever is needed for phrases such as "ill-advised throw" and "rookie mistake", Darnold provided it, handing the Detroit Lions a gift of a touchdown with a bad-decision, bad-pass interception. On a 3rd and 2, the rookie signal caller launched a 41-yard touchdown pass to Robby Anderson for his first career touchdown. Darron Lee returned an interception for a touchdown, and Andre Roberts scored on a 78-yard punt return 67 seconds later.

While Darnold and the offense were finding their groove, the Jets defense was dominating. NY completely buried the Lions in Detroit on Monday Night Football, and the exact moment it ended can be traced back to the third quarter. Jameis Winston had his first pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown in 2015. And he did look OK, although he didn't take many chances. And the Jets turned their night of high hopes and great expectations into honest-to-goodness positive results, sprinting to a 48-17 triumph over the Detroit Lions before a "Monday Night Football" television audience. Powell ran a wheel route to the left, but Diggs stayed put and broke on the ball when Darnold lofted it up.

"We were calling out their plays as he was getting up to the line", Lee said. "We've got to go out and execute a lot better on the field". He took advantage of it, moving the Jets to the end zone in five plays.

"That was awesome to be able to see them doing their thing", Darnold said. On the next play Isaiah Crowell scored a 6-yard touchdown, his first as a Jet, to tie the game 7-7.

Late in the game, just before Cassel threw an interception, hundreds of NY fans chanted: "J-E-T-S, JETS!"

Heading into this Week 1 matchup, the Jets will be without two key starting players. Johnson was evaluated after he intercepted a pass and fumbled after taking a hard hit from Detroit receiver Kenny Golladay. OG T.J. Lang left the game with a back injury.
