Shaun Williams grabbed a consolation when he robbed Ramsey outside his own box and dinked the ball over Wayne Hennessey. He also regularly broke up play, and on one such occurrence he went on to set up the third goal for Wales which was converted by Aaron Ramsey.

The home side are the clear favourites to win the match with Ireland only picking one Premier League player (Jeff Hendrick) among all the midfielders and forwards in their squad.

Forward Gareth Bale admits that Wales were keen to "make a statement" against Republic of Ireland after running out 4-1 victors in Cardiff.

James McClean will miss Ireland's opening game of the inaugural UEFA Nations League tournament with Wales on Thursday with news that he is now suffering from a wrist injury.

He said: "Ethan is a talented player".

"It's been intense as you don't get much time on the grass - some of them were playing on Sunday".

Bale also told Sky Sports: "We had to put a good performance in, first home game of the new regime. I did enjoy the performance and the goals but you always think you can do better, there were mistakes to work on, but I am extremely happy and proud".

"I think we have to improve in all aspects". Mkhi said after the game: "We lost focus after the [first] goal and [they scored]".

And while Giggs was thrilled by the display of his young side, Ireland coach Martin O'Neill bemoaned being without senior players including Harry Arter, Robbie Brady and Shane Long for the trip to Cardiff.

Just 12 minutes later Real Madrid forward Bale controlled a long pass from Tottenham fullback Ben Davies on his chest before cutting inside and curling a left-foot shot past Randolph from the edge of the box for his 30th worldwide goal. "I can't remember us being this decimated before".
