Djokovic dismisses Del Potro to win U.S. Open

But off the back of a 24-shot rally, Djokovic broke again for 5-3 and he was within tantalising touching distance of his 14th Grand Slam title, just three months after he had left Roland Garros in despair after a shattering quarter-final exit. Later, after winning a point, Djokovic put that finger to his ear, as if to say, "Who are you cheering for now?!"

Is Novak Djokovic beatable in Grand Slam finals when he is fully fit and confident?

It was a lengthy match despite the two players playing just three sets, ending after three hours and 15 minutes of play.

Federer lost in the fourth round in NY, while Nadal retired from his semifinal against del Potro because of a bad right knee.

Del Potro - the 2009 champion back for a second slam final after overcoming career-threatening wrist injuries - threw everything he had at his rival, but Djokovic absorbed the Argentinian's power superbly, his returning of serve particularly outstanding.

"There is a lot of significance of me being now shoulder to shoulder in terms of Grand Slam wins with him".

"I think it was a very excited crowd at times", Chris Widmaier, managing director of the USTA's corporate communications, told ESPN regarding Sunday's final.

"That inspired me to start playing tennis".

Del Potro is known as one of tennis' good guys and modesty like this further reinforces that reputation.

But in the last eight weeks the 31-year-old has resembled the Grand Slam machine that held all four major titles at the same time in 2016, wining three of his last four events including Wimbledon and U.S. Open.

"He treats others the way he wants others to treat him", Djokovic said of the respect del Potro commands in the locker room. He had to endure a dramatic 20-minute service game in which his opponent had three more break points but could not take them.

After holding his serve easily, an amped-up del Potro aggressively attacked Djokovic from the baseline in the next game.

Djokovic ended up approaching the net 36 times, more than double the total of the six-foot-six del Potro.

"I think most of all, the respect they had for other player, they never went over the line and that's something truly incredible tonight", Djokovic said at the presentation ceremony.

Del Potro, seeded third, was appearing in the second Grand Slam final of his career nine years after reaching his first.

Djokovic particularly struggles in the hot and humid conditions that hit NY over much of the fortnight and looked out of sorts against Marton Fucsovics in the first round - splitting the first two sets, he trailed 4-2 in the third - Joao Sousa in the fourth and giant killer John Millman in the quarterfinals. "I really am", he said. The US Open winners have been crowned. "I don't know", she said.

Ever since being stretched to four sets in his second round against Tennys Sandgren, Djokovic did not drop a set, demolishing the likes of Federer-slayer John Millman, Kei Nishikori and del Potro en route to the top step of the podium.
