Mr Dutton was restored as home affairs minister on Monday, but his immigration responsibilities have been taken over by David Coleman.

But Mr Abbott's spokesman told The Daily Telegraph he is "worried about something that is a title without a role", saying he would consider the proposal but "needed to know the precise terms of what was being proposed, as it's not clear how any such role would interact with the minister and all the other bodies in this space".

"I want to use his experience", Mr Morrison said on Monday.

"Australians expect that of their parliament and I'm pleased that's the case", Morrison told reporters when asked about comments from former Prime Minister Tony Abbott, a leader of the conservative faction that ousted Turnbull, that the "era of the political assassin is over".

The changing of the guard has resulted in changes to the ministerial cabinet, landing Mr Buchholz as Roads and Transport assistant minister in the new Morrison government. Wentworth is a swing seat and, should the Liberals lose it, the party would also lose its slim majority in the House of Representatives, leaving it potentially unable to pass legislation independently in even the lower house before the 2019 election.

"He certainly wouldn't be the first prime minister to do that".

One senior Liberal said: "Dave Sharma is an incredibly impressive person who should be in Parliament".

"Serving in the Australian parliament would be an enormous honour, but whenever Malcolm Turnbull resigns I will not be standing for preselection in Wentworth", the NSW RSL president said.

Abbott's sister, Christine Forster, said on Monday she wanted to be the Liberal Party candidate in Turnbull's Sydney electorate which is the wealthiest in Australia.

"I thank Jennifer Westacott, the staff and members for the opportunity".

Broadcaster Ray Hadley - under fire for encouraging MPs to abandon Turnbull in favour of conservative Peter Dutton - told Abbott the role was intended as an olive branch and sign of respect.

Ms Forster has been a Liberal councillor for the City of Sydney for the past six years and was a leading figure in last year's successful same-sex marriage campaign.

"I've been going to Indigenous Australia for years and years and years now".

Mr Turnbull is expected to officially stand down from parliament this week and trigger a by-election in his safe Liberal seat.

Turnbull said he was impressed by his party's decision not to reward Dutton and to elect Morrison, whom he descried as a "very loyal and effective treasurer".
