Teddy Bridgewater to be traded to Saints from the New York Jets

NY signed Bridgewater to a one-year, $6 million contract in March. The trade likely signals the Jets will go with Darnold in Week 1.

On Wednesday, the New York Jets traded Teddy Bridgewater to the Saints, but it was how it happened that has people talking.

The Jets signed the 25-year old QB to a one-year $5 million deal back in March, after missing out on the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes and weeks before selecting their QB of the future, Sam Darnold, with the third overall pick in the NFL Draft. He parted ways with the Vikings at the end of last season, and looked like he was going to spend 2018 on the New York Jets.

Drew Brees turn 40 in January and they didn't have a clear successor to him for when he retires. The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles demonstrated the importance of a solid backup quarterback in 2017, winning a championship after Nick Foles had to replace injured starter Carson Wentz.

According to a tweet from NFL Research, Darnold will become the youngest quarterback to start a regular season opener since the 1970 merger.

Bridgewater has been impressive in the preseason this year, completing 28 of 38 passes (73.7 percent) for 316 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

The career of Teddy Bridgewater has had many twists and turns. Tom Savage and Taysom Hill were competing for the QB2 spot during the preseason, but both turned in lackluster performances.
