Madison Keys, Eugenie Bouchard, Caroline Wozniacki reach US Open's second round

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic suffered in sweltering US Open conditions Tuesday but battled through to the second round with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory over Hungarian Marton Fucsovics.

"We both struggled. We were not the only ones today".

Federer, seeking a first US Open title since winning the last of his five straight at Flushing Meadows in 2008, boasts a dominant record against mercurial Frenchman Paire, winning their first five meetings in straight sets.

Djokovic called for the doctor and asked for a bin to be put next to him because he was feeling so nauseous.

"I started making a lot of mistakes", Sharapova said.

The pair, who were not allowed to speak to their coaches during the break, spent the downtime side-by-side, "naked in the ice baths", Djokovic said in a post-match broadcast interview.

Djokovic demolished Sandgren 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round at Wimbledon on his way to a 13th Grand Slam title.

Federer saved the first eight break points he faced before finally faltering by pushing a forehand long on the ninth, losing serve for the only time while trying to close out the match at 5-2 in the third set.

Djokovic, who missed the US Open a year ago because of an elbow injury, made a winning return to Flushing Meadows earlier Tuesday, beating Marton Fucsovics in four sets.

"Obviously I felt better, especially after that 10-minute break".

"We had the ice baths next to each other".

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki also played in the heat of the day, but the weather oppressing so many seemed to suit the Dane as she defeated 2011 champion Samantha Stosur 6-3, 6-2.

"I just come up to the line, " Kyrgios said, "and try to serve it as hard as I can".

For France's Alize Cornet, however, the steamy conditions were a "nightmare" that had her weeping courtside during a three-set loss to Johanna Larsson of Sweden.

With the women already taking advantage of a WTA recommended "heat break" prior to a third set, organizers decided Tuesday afternoon that the men would be afforded a similar 10-minute off court rest prior to a fourth set under an Extreme Heat Policy. Should the men play best-of-three-set matches at majors, instead of best-of-five?

"I had heat stroke", Mayer said of his decision to call it quits.

When you do walk out onto Arthur Ashe, you feel like people are there to see the show, enjoy themselves.
