Meteorologists: Increase in air quality alerts linked to climate change

Seattle's Space Needle was swathed in haze on Monday, and it was impossible to see nearby mountains.

In Spokane, air quality slipped into the "hazardous" range.

"This is just something people use often today and it really allows them to more easily access it if they're traveling or away from their laptop or computer", said Katherine Benenati, a spokesperson with The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality.

Massive clouds of choking smoke from the wildfires has prompted air quality advisories for much of Western Canada and also forced the cancellations of two triathlons in B.C.'s Okanagan region on Sunday.

Multiple area high school sports have reported either cancelling or moving practices indoors.

Kathy, from Skyway, sent this photo in Monday night, says her auto picked up a dusting of ash.

On Sunday afternoon, several monitors in north-central Washington state showed air quality at hazardous levels.

The Federal Aviation Administration said airplanes bound for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport may be delayed because of low visibility.

Check the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency's website for the most recent conditions. Therefore, the government is advising the public reduce or reschedule strenuous activities outdoors; this is especially true for those who experience symptoms such as coughing and throat irritation.

Smoky conditions are expected to persist into Tuesday with some clearing on Wednesday when a westerly flow will clear things up later in the week, according to Global BC's chief meteorologist Mark Madryga.

Children and the elderly are advised to avoid all outdoor physical exertion.

"We are disappointed that we can't see the mountains and the whole city, because our relatives live here and tell us how pretty it is, and we're missing it", Bev Harris said.
