Google Redesigns Fit, Adds New Features

And, just like before, you can connect other apps such as Strava, MyFitnessPal, Runkeeper, and more to Google Fit so you can get Move Minutes and Heart Points based on activity tracked through them, too.

Exactly how accurate the data will be for your Move Minutes or Heart Points when you're just using your phone is now unclear.

The new Google Fit showcases Google's new Material Theme UI with lots of white, the Google Sans font, a bottom navigation bar, etc.

Google is revamping its fitness platform ahead of a potential smartwatch push this fall.

For this update, Google says it's worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Heart Association (AHA), in order to better understand the science behind physical fitness and health.

'When it comes to your health, it's important to move more and sit less, ' the technology giant said. You get one point for one minute of moderate activity, and research has shown that just 30 minutes of a brisk walk 5 days in a week allows you to reach the recommended weekly activity goal. This integration with other apps is designed so that Google Fit can keep track of all of your activity. Google says if you "pick up the pace" while you're walking the dog, you'll earn points. "Google Fit will automatically detect these activities using your phone or watch sensors - like the accelerometer and Global Positioning System - to estimate the number of Heart Points you earn", Hollendoner said. Instead it will live inside the Wear OS app, where you'll be able to see the same overview of your activity, but won't be able to log workouts without a Wear OS smartwatch.

Google Fit is available as an Android app only, and it's not included with the platform, so you must first download it from the Google Play Store. It's also proven a key area for partnerships between Google, Apple and the growing industry of health and wellness apps that rely on smartphone sensors to track activity.
