Manchester United lack quality to challenge for title - Scholes

The 46-year-old is now out of work since resigning as manager of Los Blancos in May just five days after winning his third consecutive Champions League trophy.

Manchester United officials do not believe Jose Mourinho will suffer "third season syndrome" and are convinced they have the squad to challenge for the Premier League title, according to Sky sources.

Zidane was linked with the France manager's job but Didier Deschamps chose to continue in the role following their World Cup triumph.

The French World Cup victor cast doubt over his Old Trafford future following United's 2-1 win over Leicester on Friday.

In his first season, under former boss Louis van Gaal, he made 16 league appearances - his most at Old Trafford during a single league campaign.

Mourinho has cast a frustrated figure at United in recent months after his side finished in second place in the Premier League table and without a trophy last season.

Now unemployed, Zidane appears to be taking out of the game before lining up a return in 2019, and L'Equipe now report that he is particularly looking to become the next Manchester United manager next summer.

The Frenchman admitted to having "small issues" with Mourinho last season and was reportedly exasperated at his manager's comments on his performances at the World Cup.

"United seem to be not too sure what's going on".

The United boss has been in the media for all the wrong reasons throughout the summer, complaining about transfers, players, and his relationship with United's executive vice-president, Ed Woodward.
