Omarosa recordings alarm Trump allies, security experts

Omarosa Manigault Newman, the former "Apprentice" star and estranged aide to President Donald Trump, claimed on Sunday that she recorded White House chief of staff John Kelly firing her in the Situation Room. And why didn't she take this opportunity to speak her mind to Trump, especially since she knew she was recording the conversation?

In the tape, played on NBC's Today programme, Mr Trump says: "Omarosa? What happened?" Trump asked on the recording.

In the book, she paints Trump as scattered, self-absorbed, misogynistic and insecure.

"They were not offering me a real job", Manigault Newman said on NBC.

He continues: "I didn't know that. Godd**m it. I don't love you leaving at all", Trump responded.

Early excerpts of her book have been denounced by White House officials, and the President this weekend called Manigault Newman a "low life". People in the White House hated her.

In a exclusive, she revealed in the book that the president was experiencing a 'mental decline'. The show aired portions of a recording of her firing by Kelly in the high-security Situation Room.

"And then you can go on without any type of difficulty in the future, relative to your reputation", he added. (Except for the part where John Kelly secretly runs the country, of course, which might be more of a deterrent to our enemies than an opening.) They might be able to get a judge to force Manigault Newman to share the recordings to make sure no nat-sec information is released, which would be a reasonable middle step.

Ms Newman told NBC there were "multiple tapes" she knew of in which Mr Trump uses the n-word, including one that she had heard - about three minutes long - in which Mr Trump says the word while filming The Apprentice.

Trump ridiculed the mainstream media for taking her seriously.

This post has been updated.

"She begged me for a job, tears in her eyes, I said Ok", Trump wrote on Twitter in a series of tweets.

But there remain questions surrounding her recording in the White House's Situation Room, where the nation's top national security issues are discussed. "I heard the tape", she said.

In the clip that aired on the "Today Show", the president asked Ms. Manigault Newman why there were news reports of her leaving the White House. She also said there are three sources in her book that corroborate her accusation.

But the incident isn't in her book because she didn't hear the tape until after the book was published.

In the taped conversation in the White House Situation Room, which is used for confidential meetings about sensitive national security issues and off-limits to cellphones and other electronic devices, Kelly told Manigault Newman that he was axing her over "serious integrity violations".

Trump acknowledged that the occupant of the Oval Office should perhaps not engage in a public war of words with an ex-employee, saying he knows "it's "not presidential" to take on "a lowlife like Omarosa".
