Spanish Super Sup Report: Sevilla v FC Barcelona 12 August 2018

Surprised by the late announcement by RFEF, Sevilla threatened to pull out if the Spanish champions field "improper lineup" of more than three non-EU players.

The two clubs are scheduled to play on Sunday night in Tangier, Morocco (3:30 p.m. ET, ESPNEWS and ESPN Deportes), and the Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced one day before the game that the match would have no squad restrictions concerning the use of non-EU players.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced that teams could field an unlimited number of players without European Union citizenship, a change in the rules for La Liga, which limits teams to three non-EU players in a matchday squad.

This is also the first year that the trophy will be decided over one game, with the Super Cup previously a two-legged affair.

Messi, who was appointed Barca's new captain earlier this week, moves clear of Andres Iniesta as the club's most decorated player, who won 32 before moving to Japanese side Vissel Kobe this summer. In their last statement for the 2018-2019 season, only three were due to be allowed, without exception.

Barcelona aren't expected to stay in Morocco and will instead fly back to Spain immediately following the conclusion of the match.

"The club's legal department is studying the matter and should FC Barcelona line up with more than three non-EU players, it would present possible ground for withdrawal due to an improper line-up".

But Barcelona are keen to avoid any clashes with Sevilla and have erred on the side of caution by leaving Malcom out of the squad and have made a decision to start Arthur, while Coutinho and Vidal have been named as substitutes.

"As for the Supercopa not being a professional competition, I do not know what to tell you", he said.
