Arsenal v Manchester City

Arsenal v Manchester City

Manchester City's goal is simple: win the Premier League and Champions League.

City's second-string side still too good for off-the-pace Arsenal: Vincent Kompany, Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sane and Nicolas Otamendi all started on the bench but yet City were still far superior than their hosts. And the team for 90 minutes, they ran, they tried, they pushed, but I think we need to improve [everything], collectively and also individually. Torreira is the likeliest candidate to do so against Manchester City.

"We wanted to be professional, we wanted to make it serious like last season. And also, we need to continue to work tactically with defensive options and to shorten the difference today between Manchester City and us". "They can win it in central areas and then counter attack".

Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva scored the goals as City beat a new-look Arsenal side 2-0, producing a hugely impressive performance containing both style and substance.

Arsenal rarely threatened as an attacking force until the introduction of Alexandre Lacazette for the willing but unrewarded Aaron Ramsey early in the second half. He looked uncomfortable with the ball at his feet and seemed to suffer from a lack of confidence after conceding the opener.

Sergio Aguero passed up a hugely presentable chance just before Silva put the result beyond any doubt with 64 minutes gone with a thunderous strike from a Benjamin Mendy cutback, as the Unai Emery era at Arsenal ended in disappointing fashion.

New centre-back Sokratis looked as shaky as partner Shkodran Mustafi, while game but jittery youngster Guendouzi and serial offender Granit Xhaka - giving a greatest hits performance that involved giving the ball away in unsafe areas, a lazy booking and needlessly embellished sideways passes - offered only a flimsy screen.

In the end it mattered little.

Attempting to become the first team since Manchester United in 2009 to retain the title, the champions were good value with goals by Raheem Stirling and Bernardo Silva.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the new Arsenal kit.

"We feel that we could have got something from the game", he told BBC Sport.

"We knew we had to go and get the second because they started the second half very strong".

"We played a high level considering the lack of physical condition for numerous players who arrived back late after the World Cup", he said.

Emery has commented recently that he wants his team to play like City, and he will demand intensity and pressing that was often lacking from his predecessor's teams. Inevitably, you can make a few mistakes.
