Frank Lampard would have been proud of Tom Lawrence's lovely free-kick

Frank Lampard would have been proud of Tom Lawrence's lovely free-kick

Ten minutes later and Leeds United were back in front, Kemar Roofe scoring from a 22nd minute towering header after good work from Barry Douglas and Gjanni Alioski to restore the Whites lead.

Lampard will now be charged to do better than that and take Derby back to the top flight for the first time since 2008, when the club was relegated with just 11 points.

The quality of Leeds movement forward caused Derby problems from the start and it was no surprise when Mateusz Klich fired a low shot past Scott Carson in the fifth minute. We went into the game under no illusions and knew it would be hard for us.

Tom Lawrence hit back for Derby when his swerving free-kick deceived Leeds keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell and evaded his dive for the ball to end in the net.

There was nothing the former England global could do about Roofe's second goal, though, the striker collecting a Klich pass and brilliantly spinning away from two defenders to thunder in a powerful drive that beat Carson at his near post.

The Rams boss made his managerial bow last week and got off the mark with a 2-1 victory away to Reading.

No other team has defeated United more times than Derby since 2010, getting the better of their opponents 10 times.

Leeds ran riot against the Potters at Elland Road and cruised to a 3-1 win which instantly had many talking of Marcelo Bielsa's side as promotion contenders.

"That's not to say we're not good enough, we certainly are but we need to be braver and can't play longer balls when we should be trying to get out because that's an easy option".

Lampard had raided his former club Chelsea for the services of the promising young defender Fikayo Tomori on loan for the season while Martyn Waghorn, who arrived from Ipswich this week, was given the chance to show what he could bring to the attack.
