Chelsea blank Huddersfield in Sarri's debut

Jorginho marked his Premier League debut with a goal as Chelsea kicked off their campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Huddersfield Town at the John Smith's Stadium.

World Cup victor Kante's untidy 34th-minute volley and Jorginho's audacious penalty on the stroke of halftime put Chelsea in control before Pedro wrapped up the points in the closing stages.

STAR MAN - Mounie seemed the most likely to hurt the visiting Londoners and came quite close to equalising after Kante scored in the first half. Jorginho also impressed and Eden Hazard was typically brilliant when he came on in the second half.

Kante volleyed the Blues ahead on 34 minutes after neat approach play from Pedro and Willian. There were groans from some when the team was announced - the likes of Marcos Alonso, Willian and Alvaro Morata have not been popular with sections of Chelsea's support - but their performances vindicated Sarri's decisions.

Jorginho's penalty raised eyebrows and delighted neutrals, the former Napoli midfielder deceiving goalkeeper Ben Hamer with a skip in his run-up before rolling the ball home.

Laurent Depoitre had Town's best chance in the second half but he shot wildly over after being teed up by Florent Hadergjonaj.

Huddersfield boss David Wagner felt bad luck cost his side in the season-opener.

Eden Hazard On Bench – Chelsea Team vs Huddersfield Confirmed

"It depends on me and the players".

"I've seen the spirit, attitude and togetherness we need for our season".

"We are not a physical team and I think the best of the game is the capacity of suffering for 15 minutes".

Huddersfield enjoyed more possession toward the half-hour mark as Steve Mounie's rising effort cleared the crossbar and a series of crosses from Huddersfield left-back Chris Lowe tested Chelsea's defence. We hit the bar twice - once when we were 1-0 down after conceding a very unlucky goal from a deflection. On this evidence, he will have to do so again if they are to repeat last season's heroics. That was the biggest threat to Chelsea's goal, with the Spain global comfortably dealing with headers from Philip Billing and Laurent Depoitre. You can't switch on against a top-quality team like Chelsea.

"I am very happy because in the first part of the season for us it is not easy to gain points".

But there was no instant return on that investment as Jeffrey Schlupp and Wilfried Zaha scored either side of half-time to give Palace a 2-0 win at Craven Cottage.
