Mosquitoes in Boise, Garden City Test Positive for West Nile

What are the symptoms of West Nile? Two different mosquito populations included the presence of West Nile.

Dallas County in Texas is the latest community in the United States of America to report West Nile virus cases during 2018. So far there have been none reported in Jefferson and Orleans Parish. In 2017, Ada County's first positive West Nile test pool was reported in mid-July.

Dallas is not alone in reporting West Nile virus cases.

WNV is primarily transmitted to humans by the common house mosquito, while the Asian tiger mosquito can also carry the disease. Remove trash and clutter, including discarded waste tires, buckets, tarps and any other items that could collect water.

Drain or dump standing water weekly. Make sure swimming pools and fountains are operational and circulating.

West Nile Virus has made its second appearance in Lambton County this summer, says Lambton Public Health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends insect repellents that contain DEET, Picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus or para-menthane-diol, or 2-undecanone.

Protecting yourself from mosquito bites is more important that ever. Of those who show symptoms, most will experience mild illness, including fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting and rash on chest, stomach or back. They say that someone with symptoms has recently been released from a local medical facility. Fever generally resolves itself without treatment, but risky brain infections such as encephalitis or meningitis can develop in 1 out of 150 people.

West Nile virus infection can only be diagnosed by a health care provider. They routinely collect samples for testing.
