Barca Reveal New Captain

Barcelona have decided upon their captains for the season ahead after Andres Iniesta left at the start of the summer, and Javier Mascherano departed in January.

Lionel Messi was named as Barcelona's captain on Friday following the departure of long-serving midfielder Andres Iniesta, while defenders Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto were named new vice-captains in a statement by the La Liga champions.

The Argentina worldwide, who already wears the armband for his country, takes over from Iniesta following his move to Vissel Kobe at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

Messi's elevation to captain comes 14 years after he made his senior debut for the club, as a 17-year-old in 2004.

From that quartet, the club announced on their official website that Messi will be their first-choice captain with Busquets as vice-captain.

Sergio Busquets will be the second captain, while Gerard Pique is third line as he enters his 10th season with the club.

Rather ironically when you consider the fact La Masia is struggling to produce talent for the first team, all four captains of the club spent time in the academy and were trained by the Blaugrana.

Messi will lead Barca out in the Spanish SuperCup on Sunday against Sevilla in the Moroccan port of Tangier.
