Tottenham make history by completing no summer signings

Asked whether he he believed there would be any movement in or out of Old Trafford on deadline day, Mourinho replied: "The information I have is no".

Indeed, players who are free agents can also be signed up until the August 31 deadline, meaning the Seasiders and Town will have no need to stress if they can't bring in any new faces before the August 9 window closes.

Mourinho had warned it would be a "difficult season" if United did not make any more acquisitions and it now looks like his side will miss out. "I am not confident, and the market closes today, so it's time, at least for me, to stop thinking about the market because the market will be closed".

Not enough money has been spent, says the Portuguese, who has seen three players added to his squad over the summer - Brazil midfielder Fred for $60 million, Portuguese defender Diogo Dalot ($24 million) and third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant ($2 million). I don't think just because they haven't signed a centre-back we should be sat here thinking "We'll let Manchester United off the hook, they shouldn't be challenging this year".

He added that he feels Manchester City will simply be too good for their rivals, commenting: "I said at the end of last season that to go down as an all-time great team, they need to be serial winners and defend their title, and I think they will do that".

"I am not confident".

The lack of new signings will compound issues surrounding his squad for the start of the Premier League season.

As far as the rest are concerned, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini are very unlikely to feature as they only returned to training on Monday.

"They return on Monday, trained Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and today so you can imagine that they are not really fit and ready but we have needs", Mourinho said.

"I told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane, I repeat and maybe tomorrow the reaction is the same: Pre-season hard when you don't have your players to work, that's as simple as that".

"Because it is very important their feeling and to understand how they think they can help or not help".
