Indonesian geological agency: Tsunami warning after 7.0 M natural disaster off Lombok island

A powerful natural disaster rocked the Indonesian islands of Lombok and Bali on Sunday, killing at least 82 people, injuring hundreds and damaging thousands of homes just a week after another quake in the region killed 16 people.

"We are cutting short our holiday because I can't walk and we're just not in the mood anymore, more in the mood to see our loved ones", said the 26-year-old, sitting on a trolley with his leg bandaged. It was followed by more than 120 aftershocks recorded by a local Agency of meteorology, climatology and Geophysics.

Lombok, about 40km (25 miles) east of Bali, attracts tourists from around the world to its beaches and hiking trails.

Mataram residents described a powerful jolt that sent people fleeing from buildings.

"Everyone immediately ran out of their homes, everyone is panicking", Iman, who like many Indonesians has one name, told AFP.

Later speaking from Lombok's main city Mataram, Vaessen said a makeshift hospital had been set up to treat the injured, after the quake left the hospital unusable.

Makeshift wards were set up to treat patients in tents surrounded by drip stands and monitros while the doctors attended them. It said a tsunami was detected in the Carik and Badas areas; it however lifted the warning much later.

Muhamad Juanda, who narrowly escaped the mosque collapse, said 100 people were praying inside when the earth began to roll.

The cabinet minister is in Indonesia for a regional counter-terrorism conference with a delegation from Australian, including the Australian Federal Police commissioner.

It was the second deadly quake in a week to hit Lombok.

One local tweeted pictures of destruction at a shopping centre in Kuta.

The United Nations has offered to support rescue and relief efforts if required.

The Indonesian tourist island of Lombok has been hit by its second deadly natural disaster in a week, that has flattened houses and toppled bridges.

Celebrity model Chrissy Teigen is now holidaying there with singer husband John Legend and their two children Luna, two and Miles, three months.

"There are reports. that there are people buried alive, it is a critical time for immediate evacuation", he added, without giving details.

Teigen wrote: "Oh man". I'm naked. I'm naked'. "I'm naked. I'm naked".

The aftershocks unnerved Teigen, too.

"This is it for me in Indonesia", she said. "I'm trying to be normal here!".

'We can not evacuate all of them all at once because we don't have enough capacity on the boats, ' Muhammad Faozal, of West Nusa Tenggara's tourism agency, told AFP.

It is to be noted that the Lombok airport will be operating around the clock and the flight schedule has been increased for easy evacuation and safety of tourists.

Indonesia, which straddles the Pacific's "Ring of Fire," is prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Rescuers are still struggling to reach survivors of the deadly Indonesian natural disaster that has killed at least 91 people.

Indonesia is regularly hit by earthquakes.
