Diego Godin rejects United as Mourinho issues grim update

Manchester United have reportedly switched their focus to Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin in their frantic search for a new centre-back.

A report from Sky Sports News suggested contact had been made between United and Atletico Madrid over the possibility of signing Diego Godin.

Solhekol added that the 32-year-old himself didn't want the move because he's about to sign a new deal at the Wanda Metropolitano after United triggered his £18m release clause and offered him £150,000-a-week wages.

Obviously Godin would be a superb short-term addition if United were able to pull it off but it's looking highly unlikely unless things take a drastic change over the next couple of hours. With this in mind, a move for the 32-year-old Uruguayan global would make sense. It is understood that the defender is likely to sign a new contract with Los Rojiblancos instead.

Godin, who was one of the best defenders at this summer's World Cup as Uruguay reached the quarter finals, could be the answer to Mourinho's prayers. He has 122 worldwide caps and has scored 8 times for Uruguay.

At the time United were themselves scrambling around to get a deal for either Toby Alderweireld, Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng or Yerry Mina over the line, without any success.

Manchester United have had a frustrating transfer window so far, having been unable to secure a number of priority targets.
