Happy Birthday Barack Obama: Illinois celebrates annual holiday

The survey shows over 50% of American voters believe the strong economic data, unemployment rate, and 4.1% GDP growth are directly related to Trump's policies, with 40% giving credit to former President Barack Obama.

Even though Obama Day is a state holiday in IL, a spokesperson for Obama confirmed that he would not be celebrating his birthday in the state.

He served in the IL state Senate from 1997 to 2005 before joining the U.S. Senate.

For the first time, Mr Obama's birthday is being celebrated as a commemorative holiday in his former home state of IL. "Happy birthday to my brother, my friend, @BarackObama", Biden wrote.

The Illinois General Assembly unanimously passed the commemorative holiday earlier this year. Bruce Rauner signed the bill into law in 2017.

"It's incredibly proud for IL that the president came from IL". "I don't think it should be a formal holiday with paid, forced time off, but I think it should be a day of acknowledgment and celebration".

Former President Obama received a special honor on Saturday. Alongside a selfie of the pair smiling together, he tweeted, "Our lunches together were a highlight of every week at the White House". Instead of posting a long, detailed message to celebrate the former president's birthday, Michelle kept things short and sweet with her caption. "Last week's trip to Dog Tag Bakery was no different".
