5 killed in plane crash in California parking lot

Five people were killed when their twin-engine Cessna airplane crashed near South Coast Plaza in Santa Ana on Sunday afternoon, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

The pilot of the Cessna 414 declared an emergency before the plane crashed into the parking lot near John Wayne Airport, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Photos from the scene showed the plane upright but on its belly. The parking lot is shared by Staples, a CVS drug store, a Michaels' decorations store, and a Wells Fargo Bank branch.

The incident reportedly occurred at around 12.30pm on Sunday. The plane struck at least one unoccupied vehicle, whose owner was elsewhere shopping at the time.

Orange County Fire Authority and Costa Mesa Fire Department in the 3900 block of Bristol Street in Santa Ana. The FAA launched an investigation into the crash, and added that the National Transportation Safety Board will determine the probable cause.

The aircraft was heading to John Wayne Airport, but it was unclear where it was coming from, according to spokeswoman Deanne Thompson.

A married couple had their lives saved when an off-duty firefighter pulled them from the aircraft.
