Venezuela's Maduro target of drone 'attack,' but unharmed: government

In a live television statement, government minister Jorge Rodriguez confirmed that seven military personnel were injured in an attack Maduro.

Reporter Roman Camacho tweeted, citing an unofficial source, that drone loaded with C4 detonated close to the presidential box.

While Maduro was speaking about Venezuela's economy, the audio suddenly went and he and others on the podium looked up, startled. Maduro's speech was abruptly cut short and soldiers could be seen breaking ranks and scattering.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro survived an assassination attempt after several drones exploded near him while he was giving a speech in Caracas, Venezuela's capital.

According to a report at the Washington Post, firefighters on the scene are disputing the government's version of the events.

The transmission was then cut off.

The country's leader was addressing the military in Caracas to mark the 81st anniversary of the Bolivarian National Guard of Venezuela.

Hundreds of soldiers lined up as part of the procession on Avenue Bolivar then began running. The CBS News report describes Venezuelan First Lady Cilia Flores being shown to "wince" on the video.

Mr Maduro is expected to address the nation soon.

Three officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the case say the incident was actually a gas tank explosion inside an apartment.

A National Guard captain, Juan Carlos Caguaripano, early previous year attacked a military base with a group of current and former military officials.
