Child dies after being thrown into Hillsborough River; mother charged

Authorities say a 4-year-old girl is dead after a woman believed to be her mother threw her into a Florida river.

At about 4:06 p.m., police began getting calls about a child in the river, according to WFTS-TV (Tampa Bay).

Police took the woman into custody at a nearby location.

Police said the girl's mother, 26-year-old Shakayla Denson, had just stolen a Nissan Altima from an autoshop before she "waded" into the water with Daniels.

Witnesses told police that Denson dragged the screaming girl to the water, waded in until she was shoulder deep and pushed the girl into the current to float away.

Horrified witnesses saw Denson wade out of the river after carrying the girl into the current and pushing her under, watching as she flailed and floated away.

Denson created a GoFundMe for her daughter nine months ago which is titled "Life with Je'Hyrah".

"It is tragic, chaotic and just downright unbelievable all at the same time", Dugan said at a Friday news conference.

Denson is accused of stealing a car from an auto fix shop, then parking the vehicle on North Rome Avenue, police said.

"You can imagine we do have a few witnesses that called us, and they're kind of shaken up a bit", Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said at the scene, "and so it's a insane scene that we are still unraveling numerous pieces".

Denson's daughter, Je'Hyrah Daniels, was found unconscious in the water about 75 feet from shore. They were by themselves in the river so I don't know why I took a picture. ". they felt paralyzed by the whole thing".

"Witnesses say the child was screaming", Dugan explained.

Tampa Bay Times reports that a 4-year-old girl died after being thrown from a bridge in Tampa. She is also charged with child abuse and grand theft auto.

"I live in the building across and I was out on the balcony and I first looked to see if therew as a boat, like perhaps this person's boat had broken down", said Vicki Walker.
