Israel 'thwarts IS attack' on Golan Heights

The strike was carried out late Wednesday after the militants crossed a ceasefire line and came within a few hundred metres (yards) of the fence in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, Israeli army spokesman Jonathan Conricus said.

Russian Federation will deploy its military police on the Golan Heights frontier between Syria and Israel, its defense ministry said on Thursday, after weeks of mounting volatility in the area. They were believed to be fleeing the Syrian army of President Bashar Assad.

Still, in related violence, Israel's military said Thursday that its aircraft fired on "several armed terror operatives in the southern Syrian Golan Heights" overnight and that troops were on high alert.

"From our perspective, the situation is returning to how it was before the civil war, meaning there is a real address, someone responsible, and central rule", Lieberman told reporters during a tour of air defence units in northern Israel.

In Moscow, the Russian Defence Ministry said its deployment of military police on the Syrian-held Golan was aimed at supporting a decades-old United Nations peacekeeper presence. They were carrying explosives and five were armed with AK47 assault rifles.

Israel seized 1,200 square kilometres of the Golan Heights from Syria in the Six-Day War of 1967 and later annexed it in a move never recognised by the global community.

The 370-km-length of borders were completely returned to safety following the considerable Syrian Army progress in Daraa province, and finishing the terrorism (ISIS) presence in the area.

Following the May 10 attack, Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said that the IDF had destroyed "almost all of Iran's military infrastructure sites in Syria". "I think this is also in Assad's interest".

Sergei Rudskoi, a senior Russian defense ministry official, said that Russian military police had on Thursday begun patrolling in the Golan Heights and planned to set up eight observation posts in the area.

The Syrian civil war erupted in 2011 and Russian intervention in 2015 helped to turn the tide in Assad's favor. "Once the situation has been stabilized, these posts will be handed over to personnel from the Syrian government forces".

"We will not allow the religious extremist regime in Tehran to build military power in Syria that presents a threat to the citizens of Israel".
