Giuliani: Trump, Cohen legal teams sever ties

Michael Cohen alleges that then-candidate Donald Trump knew in advance about a controversial June 2016 Trump Tower meeting where Russians offered to give damaging information on Hillary Clinton.

Giuliani said his shift stemmed from the revelation that Cohen had been "surreptitiously recording his clients" - referring to the tape of Cohen and Trump discussing a payment to former Playboy model Karen McDougal, who's alleged she had a long-running affair with Trump before he became president. "If they rely on him ... it would destroy whatever case they have".

But Davis said the president's team "forfeited all confidentiality" when Giuliani talked publicly last week about the tape.

"I put family and country first", he added, signaling that he is willing to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller and prosecutors from the Southern District of NY, even if it puts President Trump in jeopardy. "Do you think the Fake News Media will ever report on this tweet from Michael?" the president questioned.

"I thought he was taping all phone conversations.but to tape people when you're sitting in the office with them, that would be highly suspect", Nunberg said.

In an interview with ABC News earlier this month, Cohen declined to answer if Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting in advance, citing the advice of his lawyers and the ongoing investigation.

Mr Trump also tweeted: "Sounds to me like someone is trying to make up stories in order to get himself out of an unrelated jam". Cohen lawyer Lanny Davis has countered that Trump said the opposite - instructing Cohen to "pay with cash", to which the lawyer reportedly replied, "No, no, no".

Following the release of this audio, Giuliani attempted to discredit Michael Cohen in an effort to protect his client.

Giuliani briefly described his view of some of those conversations, claiming that Cohen's statements on them "take it right out of the campaign contribution arsenal" and could protect the president from being scrutinized for campaign finance law violations.

The US president has denied the affair and earlier claimed he had no knowledge of the payment. He said I only made it because I personally love the president and Melania.

Giuliani, who had once applauded Cohen for his honesty, was asked about his dramatic change in opinion of Cohen on "Fox News Sunday", and explained, "The man is a pathological manipulator, liar".

Mr. Giuliani defended his prior comments calling Cohen an "honest, honorable lawyer". Federal investigators seized millions of records during a raid on his home and office in April, including recordings of conversations Cohen had made.
