US Senate, after Helsinki, eyes swift sanctions in…

Sen. Marco Rubio delivered a floor speech Tuesday renewing efforts to garner support for his bipartisan legislation that outlines immediate sanctions for any country that the director of national intelligence concludes interfered in a US election. "In so doing, he dimmed the light of freedom ever so slightly in our own country".

"In the face of unequivocal evidence that Russian Federation worked to undermine our elections in 2016 and continued aggression from the Kremlin just four months until our next federal elections, we must take action. We will bring it back Tuesday of next week and I hope that those who objected will reconsider", Flake said at a news conference on Thursday in which he was accompanied by Coons.

McConnell announced Thursday on the Senate floor that he was pulling the nomination of Ryan Bounds.

The Senate unanimously passed a resolution Thursday expressing opposition to the notion the United States might cooperate with the Russian government to make former USA diplomats, officials, and military members available for questioning. After making their initial remarks, GOP Whip Sen.

Donald Trump backtracked his support of Vladimir Putin's denial of Russia's meddling, claiming that he misspoke. "We must make sure Putin understands that we will not overlook his hostilities, and he will face punishing consequences if he tries to interfere in our elections again", Rubio said.

Lawmakers, alarmed with Trump's conduct only days after USA authorities indicted 12 Russian spies on meddling charges, were trying to formulate a legislative response. Both are prominent Trump critics. John McCain, R-Arizona, calling it "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory". After that position provoked criticism from across the political spectrum, Trump claimed on Tuesday that he misspoke and believes Russian Federation did interfere in the election.

"I accept our intelligence community's conclusion that Russia's meddling in the 2016 election took place", Trump said, adding Wednesday that there's "never been a president as tough on Russian Federation as I have been".

Besides demanding that Russian Federation be held accountable, the resolution also called for congressional hearings into the actual summit meeting, including "the release of relevant notes and information, to better understand the impact of the recent summit ... on the foreign policy and national security of the United States".

"My concern with this resolution is that it is purely a symbolic act".

Flake said what happened in Helskini, "ranging from heartbreak and horror" was "truly Orwellian".
