Israel Launches Attack Against Hamas

The Israeli military said it had launched a "wide-scale" attack on Gaza on Friday after one of its soldiers was shot dead near the border fence of the Palestinian territory, stoking fears of a new conflict.

According to Or Heller of Channel 10, sniper fire was directed at IDF soldiers who were securing the border at the time.

The militant Islamic Hamas that rules Gaza said three of the Palestinians killed were members of the group.

Israeli military officials said a "terrorist squad" fired at troops, killing one soldier.

After dark on Friday, the Israeli military said that Gaza militants had launched three rockets into Israel, of which two were intercepted by its Iron Dome defence system.

Israel says it is defending its sovereign border and accuses Hamas, a group sworn to its destruction, of using the protests as cover for attempts to breach the border fence and attack civilians and soldiers. He was on "operational activity" when he and colleagues came under fire, the military said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held emergency discussions with cabinet colleagues and military chiefs about the escalation, which follows four months of Palestinian border protests.

On Friday, Hamas vowed to continue its protests and the launching of incendiary devices towards Israel.

The Gaza Health Ministry said 80 Palestinians were wounded by gunfire in that rally. They also have thrown Molotov cocktails and flown flaming kites that have caused several fires.

Palestinian protesters in the Gaza Strip gather once again along the so-called buffer zone for a fresh anti-Israel protest.

Almost 150 Palestinians have been killed since the demonstrations began on 30 March, majority shot by Israeli snipers.

"Everyone in Gaza needs to step back from the brink. Right NOW! Those who want to provoke Palestinians and Israelis into another war must not succeed".

Following the strikes, rocket warning sirens wailed in communities around Gaza.
