Trevor Noah defends 'Africa won the World Cup' joke

THE DAILY SHOW host Trevor Noah has been accused of racism for saying Africa won the World Cup - because of the number of black players in the French national team.

The comedian read part of Araud's letter in a "Behind the Scenes" segment of his show in which he appeared to double down on his original message.

"Nothing could be less true". All but two of the 23 players were born in France, but all are French citizens.

Maduro nonetheless congratulated the team for the "beautiful" way they played and paid tribute to his ally and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for putting on "the best World Cup in the history of football".

When I say they're African, I'm not saying it as a way to exclude them from their Frenchness. They claimed their love of France.

The South African comedian was accused of racism over his comments in a segment on the late night USA television programme this week, after France beat Croatia 4-2 in the Russian Federation 2018 final.

Mr Araud said that France, unlike the U.S., did not believe in "hyphenated" identities. Roots are an individual reality. "I am saying I see you my French brother of African descent", he concluded.

Noah responded to Araud's letter by saying the great thing about America is the fact that you can celebrate diverse backgrounds without detracting from one background or the other.

"And if you doubt that, just ask the French football team that just won the World Cup". Not in a negative way but in a positive way as in, 'Look at these Africans, who can become French. "Yes! Yes, I'm so excited". Twitter told Engadget it wasn't sharing specific numbers, like it did for the 2014 World Cup when it announced the Germany vs. Brazil finals attracted 35 million tweets.

Noah also commented on double standards in the French government's language regarding players versus African migrants, and referenced to the country's own immigration policies.

French fighter jets flew over the famous avenue displaying the tricolour, and President Macron embraced the players once more as he had done at the Luzhniki on Sunday.

Praising the virtues of diversity, Obama singled out the French team, adding with a smile, "Not all these folks look like Gauls to me (but) they are French, they are French!" "You don't get that tan in the South of France", he'd said on his show.

"I think that's what guided them, even when they had no outstanding players but their trust in Modric and his confidence in his mates inspired them".
