No Man's Sky NEXT update trailer

One of the biggest new features that comes with the Next update (yes, that is its actual name) will be multiplayer, allowing you to team up with budding explorers either as a group of mates or with random players.

Hello Games' procedurally generated space explorer No Man's Sky is about to get a huge update, adding several much-requested features including unlimited base building, improved visuals and, most importantly, multiplayer.

Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies. And it's all for free and will launch on July 24. According to Sean Murray's post on the PlayStation Blog, the entire game is playable in third or first person mode, with added character customization. You can also own multiple bases and build anywhere on a planet. Additionally, there's "also significantly more detail added to ships, NPCs and buildings".

Increased base-building complexity and size limits.

Assemble and upgrade a fleet of frigates and command them from the bridge of your freighter.

Send your fleet into the universe or deploy them to help you explore. You can invite pals on missions too, says the dev-all of which allows for a "truly custom capital ship". Furor (and interest) has died down since then, but the developers are still working on No Man's Sky. Or will you organically encounter players in a similar way to Destiny? Now, those fantasies might not play out exactly as you'd have hoped in No Man's Sky, but this is a game that begs those who put in the time to come back just once more and see what lies just over the horizon.

Update: Game dev Amy Dentata pointed out that the robot-dogs have always been around if you raise alerts to a certain point.

The game was initially released in the summer of 2016 on PlayStation 4 and PC to mixed reception.

Here's the lowdown on what you are getting on July 24th on PS4, Xbox One owners can pick up the game on August 9th.
