Astros option Ken Giles to Triple-A Fresno

Astros option Ken Giles to Triple-A Fresno

When watching the replays of Giles's exit, it's not 100 percent clear he was directing the expletive at manager A.J. Hinch, but it sure did seem like it.

The Astros announced that they had optioned Giles down to Triple-A Fresno.

Hinch commented on the incident post-game. Giles had been in the throes of another tumultuous ninth inning, in which he allowed three single on eight pitches. "He was pretty mad in the dugout".

"I don't know what he said", he added. I don't know man. I didn't hear anything. That stuff happens in the heat of battle. "It if turns out it was at me, we'll talk about it".

The demotion comes as Giles' poor season continues.

The Phillies traded Giles to the Astros in 2015 for a haul of pitchers Vince Velasquez, Thomas Eshelman, Brett Oberholtzer, Harold Arauz and former first overall pick Mark Appel. After an up-and-down first season in Houston, Giles looked to be emerging as the dynamic late-inning weapon the "Stros had hoped to acquire in 2017, tossing 62 2/3 innings of 2.30 ERA ball with 14 strikeouts per nine innings against 3.4 BB/9". And before you go pointing out that he is 12 for 12 in save opportunities with a zero ERA, you may want to compare that to his plus-six ERA in his other 22 relief appearances. Nearly more memorable than that was Giles punching himself in the face after giving up four runs to the Yankees in the ninth inning on May 2. He's given up 36 hits and 17 earned runs.

Perez, 22, has never pitched in an Major League Baseball game.
