Flake: Concerned by Trump's Rhetoric, Demeaning Allies and Praising Adversaries

"Vladimir Putin, to say that he's a competitor, to say it's too early to say what his intentions are, we have plenty of documentation", Avlon said. "But I am concerned and I know there is concern across Europe about what might be promised".

"We're being taken advantage of by the European Union".

That Trump will be meeting with Vladimir Putin nearly immediately thereafter, however, has North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations taking a lot more notice, and diplomats predicting Trump will make threats to redraw the security landscape in Europe if North Atlantic Treaty Organisation doesn't give him what he wants. "In fact, Putin went as far as telling the President that the 'deep state" is conspiring against them both.

CNN's John Avlon was stunned by Trump's admission, which he said was unthinkable to imagine any other president saying.

"I think that getting along with Russian Federation, getting along with China, getting along with others is a good thing, not a bad thing", he added.

Diplomats fear an acrimonious meeting could undermine efforts to show unity in the face of the growing threat on the alliance's eastern flank - particularly with Trump set to meet Putin in Helsinki a few days later. But if we split with our friends and our allies, then we'll not be able to confront the real problem here, and that is China in terms of trade.

"Dear President Trump: America does not have, and will not have a better ally than Europe", said Tusk, who chairs summits of European Union leaders.

Speaking before he departed Washington D.C. Tuesday, President responded to Tusk's taunt, remarking: "Well, we do have a lot of allies".

During a phone call with Mr. Putin in March, when the president was urged by aides not to congratulate the Russian president on his electoral victory, Mr. Trump did just that.

"Getting ready to leave for Europe". On top of that we lose $151 Billion on Trade with the European Union. "Charge us big Tariffs (& Barriers)!"

Tusk reminded Trump that the first time NATO's mutual defense clause to assist other members under attack came after the terror attacks on 9/11 and that 870 European troops have fought and died in Afghanistan.

"Dear @realDonaldTrump. US doesn't have and won't have a better ally than EU".

On other occasions, the two men discussed Syria, where Putin offered to help Trump achieve his agenda of pulling the USA out of the region, before advisers urged the President not to accept such an offer.

But he added: "I'm glad that the president is talking to Vladimir Putin".
