U.K. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson Resigns Over Brexit

He said on Monday he thought May was a good prime minister and did not want to see her replaced, but could not defend her strategy in good faith.

I am proud to have served as Foreign Secretary in your Government.

His resignation this afternoon from the Foreign Office, in response to May's Soft Brexit plan agreed at Chequers on Friday, and following the resignation of Brexit secretary David Davis last night, ends a period of political prevarication we haven't seen since Boris Johnson couldn't make up his mind about whether to back Leave or Remain at the European Union referendum.

Mrs May appointed junior minister Dominic Raab, a former diplomat who was a prominent campaigner for Leave in the 2016 referendum, as Mr Davis's successor.

On Monday, the Conservative MP became the third minister to resign from the Cabinet in recent days over Britain's plan for exiting the European Union, throwing British politics into chaos and raising the spectre of a potential Conservative leadership challenge or general election.

Conservative MPs talking to The Times newspaper said the two ministers were "self-indulgent figures ... but they are not the majority" in the party.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mr Johnson and Mr Davis had abandoned a "sinking ship", shattering the "illusion of unity" initially surrounding the Chequers plan.

Davis quit late Sunday saying he could not support May's plans for close trade and regulatory ties with the bloc after the United Kingdom leaves the European Union next year.

When asked whether May would contest any vote on a confidence motion in her leadership, her spokesman said: "Yes". They have organised a highly successful Commonwealth summit and secured record worldwide support for this Government's campaign for 12 years of quality education for every girl, and much more besides.

Tory digital minister Matt Hancock - known for his self-branded social networking app - will now takeover Hunt's portfolio as Health Secretary. "It is very far from being solved with or without Mr Davis", Tusk said.

In the minutes after the news of Johnson's resignation, the pound dropped to around 1.3270 against the dollar, a fall of more than 0.3% from it's opening price on Monday.

What about Jeremy Wright?
