Trump lawyers called Comey 'Machiavellian' in note to Mueller

Rudy Giuliani said Monday that he suspects Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team of lawyers is rife with anti-Trump partisans who have vented their anger at the president in text messages like those that drove disgraced Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok out of a position of power a year ago. Bash noted the investigation began even before Mueller's appointment, based on tips the FBI and Department of Justice received about Trump campaign associates; Stephanopoulos pointed to former FBI Director James Comey's testimony, which suggested the president attempted to obstruct an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Cohen, who worked for Trump over the past decade, is the focus of an investigation in the Southern District of NY into whether he violated campaign-finance laws or committed bank fraud, wire fraud, illegal lobbying, or other crimes.

Mr. Trump has been particularly outspoken about the special counsel investigation on Twitter lately, calling the probe a "Rigged Witch Hunt" on Saturday. Russian Federation has denied meddling.

Giuliani said Trump won't give an interview unless Mueller's probe into Russian tampering in the 2016 presidential election uncovers something that directly implicates him.

Lawyers for Mr. Trump had been eyeing early July as a possible time for an interview with the special counsel, likely at Camp David or the White House and lasting for about 2½ hours.

Cohen, who hasn't been charged, wouldn't say if he would cooperate with prosecutors in the probe.

Two sources familiar with Cohen's thinking said the president's longtime attorney and "fixer" has "hit the reset button" and was committed to speaking the "real truth", reported CNN. "We have no reason to believe he did anything wrong", Giuliani said on ABC's "This Week". "I have debriefed all their witnesses", he said. Mr. Strzok was reassigned from his post last summer after Mr. Mueller learned about the messages.

Davis has already spoken publicly about the case to say he'll be helping Cohen come forward with the truth.

"I so thank you for opening the door and talking about the most corrupt, because we certainly know that Robert Mueller is not corrupt ..."

Mr. Strzok didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Who has said the Federal Bureau of Investigation is a corrupt institution?

"How you could expect us to just walk up our client like a lamb going to the slaughter, we wouldn't be lawyers if we would do that", Giuliani said on ABC's "This Week", striking a similar tone to comments he's made repeatedly since he joined Trump's team in April. Comey has said he told Trump about the dossier allegations because they were widely known in Washington, including by the media, and that he kept his memos because he was concerned that Trump might lie about their conversations.
