Mr Ivan Karadzic, 44, a Danish volunteer cave diver who arrived at Tham Luang this week, described the challenges faced by rescuers.

More heavy rain is expected to fall over the weekend but the governor emphasized that rescuers would only try to free the team if the risk to their lives was minimal.

There was also a disheartening setback Friday with the death of a former Thai navy SEAL diving in flooded passageways to deliver oxygen supplies.

Experienced divers have to walk on rocky terrain against strong currents, swim and dive in the dark through a labyrinth of passages in murky water for six hours to reach the survivors.

Oxygen levels are decreasing because of the amount of workers inside the cave and workers were trying to run an oxygen line into the chambers in addition to the oxygen canisters used by divers, Chiang Rai province Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn had said late Thursday.

He said: 'Despite this, we will continue until we accomplish our mission'.

Saman Kuman, a 38-year-old former Thai SEAL who volunteered to help the rescue efforts, died from a lack of oxygen on Friday while delivering oxygen tanks to the cave.

A former Thai military diver died during operations to rescue 12 boys who are now trapped in a flooded cave in Changi Rai on Thursday night (July 5).

Authorities are trying to work out how best to bring the group to safety, with officials stressing they do not intend to take any risks with the boys' safety.

They became trapped after rain flooded the Tham Luang caves near Mae Sai and were not found for more than a week.

They also can't swim and have zero diving experience, making a rescue very unsafe.

More rains are forecast for the region and could complicate further rescue efforts. They boys are weak but for the most part physically healthy.

"I can't believe this happened", he told CNN by phone.

A Thai diver died while on a supply mission.

The boys are now learning how to swim and scuba dive because some parts of the cave are too narrow for more than one person to pass.

Musk hopes his engineers can join the already huge operation being carried out in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave complex, where dozens of Thai Navy SEALs and global experts are attempting to find a way to get the boys out.

Around 1,000 people are involved in the complex rescue operation.

"I talk to them every day, if they'd like us to take the kids out, it has to be in the minimum risk", he said. They need to learn some basics.

While underwater, the rescuer passed out and efforts to resuscitate him failed, Arpakorn said.

Elon Musk, the entrepreneur behind the Tesla automobile and the SpaceX rocket company, has said he would send engineers to help.

But the death of a rescue team member, and the realization that oxygen levels have fallen to potentially unsafe levels, appears to have forced a reassessment of the situation.

But Thailand's Navy Seal commander suggested on Thursday that the divers may now have little choice but to attempt a daring emergency rescue - fraught with danger for the boys, who are aged 11 to 16 and some of whom can not swim.

The boys have been trapped for almost two weeks in a chamber in the Tham Luang cave complex.

The group was found to be skinny, but in good health, and have received high-protein drinks as they are treated by the Underwater Demolition Assault Unit.

Thailand's monsoon season runs from July to October and, while the past few days have been relatively dry, the long term forecast is rain for months.
