Arsenal step up pursuit of Andre Gomes

The father of Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira has said his son is ready for the challenges that await him at Arsenal, despite conceding he and his entourage are scared of what lies in store in the Premier League.

Torreira's father Ricardo, a football journalist who is in Russian Federation for the tournament, told Uruguayan TV station Teledoce a move to the capital would be daunting.

Meanwhile, had earlier reported that Arsenal announced the signing of Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Borussia Dortmund.

"There will be people that will accompany him".

"It's hard to manage the language, to adapt to the society and customs and at the same time not lose ours". He is not going to be alone in that sense.

Ricardo Torreira told Uruguayan television channel Teledoce that despite some South American players faltering and failing to acclimatise to football in England's top-tier, he will be doing his very best to ensure his son thrives on English soil. "We don't want to think about London right now because it truly scares us".

"But there's a whole programme getting readied for Lucas", he added.

"I hope everything ends well with Arsenal".

According to a report from respected football expert Gianluca Di Marzio, Arsenal are keen on signing Barcelona midfielder Andre Gomes this summer, but the Gunners should be wary of bringing the Portugal worldwide to the Emirates.

Emery held his first session at Arsenal's London Colney base in St Albans which featured players not involved at the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup.
