Mickey: Scattered afternoon storms for several days ahead

More than 113 million Americans are under heat warnings or advisories, stretching from the Lehigh Valley to Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Baltimore and Washington D.C., according to the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center.

The temperatures on Tuesday will reach 90 degrees or higher in 44 states.

There may be scattered clouds this afternoon, but abundant sunshine will effectively add another 5 to 15-degrees to the heat indices, making conditions extremely unsafe.

"Heavy rainfall and gusty winds will be the main threat with any strong storm", the service said. There are a few storms in the region, but most of us here should remain dry with high temperatures topping out in the low-90s this afternoon. Most of these will have dissipated by the time the cold front traverses southern New England by Tuesday evening, but an isolated thunderstorm can not be ruled out north and west of the city during the evening commute.

"Once we head into next week, temps will be a little bit cooler - (we'll) still be above normal, still see highs around 90 into mid-week", he said. Heat indices will approach 100 degrees for most inland towns yet again.

"The heat may be life-threatening to the elderly and those in poor health, especially those in urban centers", the National Weather Service said in its advisory.

The heat wave is expected to persist for six to eight days in many communities, according to AccuWeather, with peak intensity hitting Monday. While the high pressure will make it hard for any t-storms to fire, a weak cold front will try to approach from our northwest Tuesday bringing a slight chance for an isolated PM t-storm, mainly north and west of the Lehigh Valley. Sunny. High: 70s - near 80 degrees. The rain should end in time for the 9 PM fireworks on the river with temperatures in the lower 80s.

Experts warn residents to be "heat smart".

Relief will continue over the weekend with sunshine on Saturday and Sunday and highs in the 80s from Friday on.
