President Trump attacks Democrats over increasing calls to abolish ICE

Following a backlash over the now-defunct family separation policy was enacted at the US southern border, Trump has increasingly cited crimes committed by undocumented immigrants as a pressing issue for the administration to deal with, despite statistics showing undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit crimes in America, The Washington Post reported at the beginning of the year.

Many anti-Trump activists, who are driving the Twitter hashtag #abolishICE, have celebrated the moves by Gillibrand, Harris and others.

Fueling its sudden ascent have been a series of recent shocks to the system. Multiple candidates for prominent elected positions have endorsed the movement, including New York congressional nominee Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democratic Socialist who ran on the issue leading up to her upset primary win over Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY).

"I don't think ICE today is working as intended", Gillibrand said on CNN Thursday evening. "I'm here for the long haul", she said.

The rapid escalation was years in the making.

The Democratic calls to scrap the agency underscore the balancing act the party is facing on immigration issues. Calls for its dissolution, once rare, are spreading.

Texas Observer reporter Jason Buch has obtained a letter signed by 19 special agents in charge of Homeland Security Investigations, or HSI, asking Sec. The one people talk about the most these days is Enforcement and Removal Operations. Even some ICE agents themselves have called for the agency to be dissolved.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), who was among a group of roughly 600 people arrested this week following a protest inside the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington, DC, appeared on CNN's this morning and explained why ICE as it now exists is untenable. Pramila Jayapal of Washington state and Adriano Espaillat of NY on legislation to eliminate the agency.

Pocan noted that ICE's duties do not include monitoring the nation's borders and deporting those who enter the country illegally.

"We're going to maintain a presence there and ensure the safety and security of the facility", he said. "You're just kind of like, all right, this has gone way astray and we need to start over".

Leading progressives, like Sens. "We need comprehensive immigration reform and we need new agencies to replace ICE", the mayor told attendees. "The city of Portland does not enforce federal immigration law, and I have been clear that Portland police will not be used to break up a nonviolent occupation on federal property of a federal agency that has its own police force".

Homan's final day was confirmed by spokeswoman Liz Johnson.

The Department of Homeland Security released a statement Saturday, saying Ronald Vitiello is being tapped as acting director.

The agency absorbed numerous investigative and detention and deportation duties of the U.S. Customs Service and former Immigration and Naturalization Service.
