India celebrates Int'l Yoga Day

Leading over 50,000 people in marking the fourth edition of International Yoga Day on Thursday, June 21, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that Yoga has affected millions of people across the world.

To begin with, the International Yoga Day (IDY) 2018 celebrations, PM Modi along with the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh - Yogi Aditya Nath, the Lucknow state witnessed an awesome sight with as many as 50,000 participants.

Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Suresh Prabhu, Uma Bharti, Ram Vilas Paswan, Ravi Shankar Prasad participated at different Yoga events at different states.

Yoga became known in the West towards the end of the 19th century as it was undergoing a major revival in India under the Hindu teacher Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902).

Troops guarding the world's highest battleground on the Siachen glacier, in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, did yoga routines at an altitude of around 18,000 feet (5,486 m).

People gathered at a sprawling forest research institute - snakes and monkeys were removed in advance - before dawn for the communal session involving the yoga-mad premier, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

"Yoga has emerged as the biggest unifying force in the world and has become a biggest mass movement", Modi said in his address. As awareness about the need for a healthy lifestyle increases, youngsters as well as senior citizens are keen on following yoga. The reason is not because of anything else but because ordinary people in China like other parts of the world are beginning to realise that yoga is contributing to making their lives successful both at the personal and professional level. And if you haven't tried your bit of yoga yet, don't wait, give it a shot and thank us later. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature.

Artist Sudarsan Pattnaik created a special sand sculpture with the message "Yoga for Peace and Harmony" on a beach in the eastern city of Puri. SSP of the district, Sdanand Date here said, " Yoga helps strength mind and intellect.

Countries such as Afghanistan, Japan and Peru held yoga sessions, while Australia and South Africa celebrated on Monday.
