Why Melania Trump Is Facing Criticism for Her Latest Fashion Statement

Images of the first lady wearing a green parka jacket from high street chain Zara with the message written in white lettering have emerged.

"She wants to see what's real", said the first lady's spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN during a 10-minute press briefing en route to Texas.

People shared on Twitter how shocked they were at the jacket's message and said they wondered why Melania wore the jacket at all, given the temperature and humidity in both D.C. and Texas, as well as the jacket's insensitive message.

Melania Trump later visited the Upbring New Hope Children's Center, where she spoke with children and staff. She was also under fire for wearing stilettos while traveling to help hurricane victims a year ago. She had been expected to travel to promote the campaign but was sidelined a week after the announcement following surgery to treat a benign kidney condition.

Melania Trump's visit also came barely an hour before divided U.S. lawmakers were to begin voting on a pair of immigration bills in the House of Representatives, including one that directly addresses the family separation issue.

If neither of those options are possible, which is the case in about 10% of the unaccompanied children, then they are placed with vetted foster families or volunteers. Some Reporters Who Cover Melania, mistaking it for a comment about the children, wondered how she could be so callous.

Mrs. Trump sat alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar at a table at Upbring New Hope Children's Center and heard caregivers explain how the children are well treated.

Trump's jacket allows her to take control of the narrative, with President Donald Trump's base doubling down on their defense of the first lady and giving the right new ammunition to slam the media. She changed into a neutral outfit by landing time. Two-thirds of Americans have said in polls they oppose separating immigrant families, though a majority of Republicans say they support the president's approach. She absolutely wanted to come'.

They had signed an American flag to give the first lady as a gift, but she made a decision to sign it and leave it for the kids to keep. At the facility, officials told the first lady that the separated children could speak to their parents twice a week.

Fashion is political for the first lady.

In any case, Melania Trump had planned the trip before the president signed the order: "I don't know what she knew" about the timing, Grisham said.

"I'm sure they're very happy and they love to study", Trump said of the immigrant children.
