Kim’s China trip may complicate things for Trump

The site in question is the Sohae Satellite Launching Ground where North Korea has previously tested "liquid-propellant engines for its long-range ballistic missiles", according to a USA official who spoke to Reuters. It has long proposed a "dual suspension", whereby North Korea stops weapons tests and the US and South Korea stop military drills, to encourage talks. The official announcement was delayed as authorities needed more time to gain understanding from some local governments that remained wary of missile threats, officials said.

President Donald Trump offered a misleading characterization of his deal with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un on Thursday, insisting the rogue nation had agreed to begin "total denuclearization" right away.

It was expected that Mr Kim would visit Beijing to brief Mr Xi on his summit with Mr Trump, which included and agreement that Pyongyang would hand over the remains of troops missing from the 1950-53 Korean War.

When the U.S. recovered 208 cases of remains from the North Koreans in the 1990s, in what became known as the "K208 cases", scientists found that they were extensively commingled, with the remains of at least 400 service members inside.

During an interview with conservative pundit Mike Huckabee, the president touted his efforts to convince Kim Jong Un to abandon his nuclear test sites.

And as the final itinerary, Kim dropped by the North Korean Embassy in Beijing.

Last September, Trump taunted Kim as "Rocket Man" in a speech at the United Nations, during which he vowed to "totally destroy North Korea" if the US was forced to defend itself or its allies.

The U.S. military will then perform a short ceremony before sending the remains to Hawaii, where they might be properly identified through DNA testing. Prior to the Singapore summit, Trump had complained that the North Koreans' attitude changed after Kim and Xi met in Dalian.

"The outside world was living in our imagination", she said during an interview on Wednesday with FOX Business' Maria Bartiromo.

North Korea has rejected unilateral nuclear disarmament.

"Obviously, it's the very front end of a process", he said.

"The firmly committed to the complete verifiable and irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula and I am committed to our mutual alliance", Davidson said at the outset of talks with Onodera in Tokyo.

For China, North Korea can serve as "an important card" as Beijing faces a potential trade war with the United States, Shin told AFP.

"We're getting together next week to go into the details", Trump told a post-summit press conference in Singapore.

"I wouldn't expect that at this point", he added.

Bolton said on Wednesday that "Pompeo and others" would be meeting North Korean counterparts, adding "we'll find out soon enough whether they've made this strategic decision".

Denmark, who left the Defense Department in 2017 and is now director of the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, said he has yet to see any indication that Kim wants to pursue denuclearization or disarmament, and instead appears to be exclusively interested in engaging the world as a nuclear power.
