First Lady Pays Surprise Visit to Migrant Children at Texas Detention Shelter

Melania Trump steps out of her motorcade before boarding an Air Force plane at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland on June 21, 2018, and traveling to Texas to visit facilities that house and care for children taken from their parents at the U.S. -Mexico border.

Melania Trump's spokesperson, Stephanie Grisham, said there was no hidden subtext behind the First Lady's wardrobe choice. "It's a jacket", she said in an email asking what the first lady's choice meant.

"After today's important visit to Texas, I hope this isn't what the media is going to choose to focus on".

Mr Trump reversed his tough stance on separating families after days of outrage over the policy from both sides of USA politics - as well as world leaders, the United Nations and Pope Francis - after images emerged of migrant children detained in cages.

The Trump administration, meanwhile, has asked the Defense Department to provide space at military facilities by the end of the year to house 20,000 children who have arrived in the US without any adults.

With the words, "Welcome!"

Trump's first stop in Texas is the Upbring New Hope Children's Center, part of Lutheran Social Services of the South, also in McAllen, Texas, a department of health and human services-overseen facility housing 60 children, ranging in age from 5 to 17 years old.

Thursday's visit was one of two that the president's wife made to the Texas facilities where some of the more than 2,300 migrant children are being housed after their families entered the USA illegally.

In signing the executive order reversing the separation policy on Thursday, Mr Trump cited his daughter and his wife as factors in his decision.

Melania Trump has been vocal about the issue of children being separated from their families, noting on Twitter that she "hates to see" the images she was seeing out of Texas and imploring Congress to fix the problem.

"What is the goal of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct", Trump said in a tweet on Thursday as he renewed his call for a change in Senate rules to allow legislation to move with a simple majority. She usually lets her husband, Donald Trump, do most of the talking. We don't want to have people - we don't want to have children separated from their parents'.

"She's seen the images", Grisham told reporters.

"I want to thank you for your hard work and compassion", Mrs. Trump said.

In any case, Melania Trump had planned the trip before the president signed the order: "I don't know what she knew" about the timing, Grisham said.
