Host Russia romped to the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup, trouncing Egypt 3-1 at St Petersberg and potentially sending the Pharaohs packing back home.

The first half of the thriller went goalless, however, both the team scored four goals in the rest of 45-minutes, entertaining the crowd.

Two minutes into the second half, Russian Federation got the breakthrough thanks to an own goal by Ahmed Fathy, who was unfortunate to see a low shot come off his knee and sail into his own net.

Cheryshev is one of only two players in Russia's squad who play for foreign clubs - the other is third-choice goalkeeper Vladimir Gabulov - and for a long time, it seemed like national-team coaches overlooked him.

The 26-year-old made his first appearance since being withdrawn as Liverpool were beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in the showpiece fixture of Europe's premier cup competition, claiming a place in Hector Cuper's starting line-up.

Egypt still have a slender chance of proceeding to the next round if Saudi Arabia beat Uruguay on Wednesday. The returning Salah rifled the kick past Igor Akinfeev and Egypt had a shard of light at the end of a dark tunnel.

Try as he might, Mohamed Salah couldn't do enough to give Egypt the victory it needed at the World Cup.

"They have to react better when they lose the ball because they conceded a little bit against a very naïve team, a team without any physical power and Egypt can hurt them".

Egypt head coach Hector Cuper said Mohamed Salah was "100 per cent" fit for the World Cup, but his absence in training ahead of the tournament due to injury was hard. They can not sacrifice points against either if they hope to avoid joining South Africa as the only hosts to miss getting out of their group.

It was nearly Salah time in the 56th minute but Kutepov produced a good block.

"We had a good first half but then we had 10-15 really bad minutes and that's why we lost". The whole country is happy I think, Russian Federation is partying.

"We do not use the word "problem" around here", he said.

"Whether I should stay in my post or not does not only depend on me. It's hard to say this but in a World Cup you have to wait until the very last minute, although it's true that our chances are minimal".
