ER Doctor Gets Suspended After Improper Treatment of Patient with Anxiety Attack

An emergency room physician has been suspended after a video showing an tense dispute with a patient went viral.

ABC News reported that Samuel Bardwell, 20, was rushed to El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos after he experienced a severe anxiety attack and passed out following West Valley College's first summer basketball workout.

Donald Bardwell told The Mercury News that his son had been previously diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and was off his anxiety medication for two days because he was unable to visit the pharmacy.

Last Monday, Samuel Bardwell, aged 20, was right in the middle of his basketball practice when he suddenly suffered an anxiety attack.

"The concerned father said he was prompted to pull out his phone and start recording after Keegstra accused him and his son, who she referred to as " people", of coming in for drugs.

"She said, 'I know why you people are here, you people who come here for drugs, ' and I said 'What do you mean you people?'" Donald Bardwell told the outlet.

Dr. Beth Keegstra treated Samuel once he arrived at the hospital but decided his pain and anxiety attacks were a laughing matter.

Keegstra referred to Samuel and Donald as "you people" and claimed she knew what they were in for - drugs.

"You want us to wheel you to your house in a gurney?" she asks him, after.

"I'm sorry, sir. You were the least sick of all the people who were here who are dying", Keegstra snaps, leaning over his hospital bed. He said the doctor "has been removed from the work schedule, pending further investigation", and the hospital has "expressed our honest apologies and are working directly with the patient on this matter".

When Keegstra replies that he needs to renew his prescription, Samual Bardwell says he's been waiting at the hospital four hours for assistance.

"Sit up!" she yells twice as she's spotted pulling the patient by the arm.

Samuel said he did nothing to provoke the doctor's unprofessional behavior. I said, 'Please, dad, can you please take out your phone?. "Yeah that's how pissed off you made me", Dr. Keegstra counters amid gasps from the father and son.

In a statement, El Camino Hospital said it's taking the matter "very seriously" and has since apologized to Bardwell and his son. "They just were not taking care of me from the beginning".

As a result, they took measures immediately and suspended Dr. Keegstra from her position.

A LinkedIn page for Keegstra identifies her as a doctor with Vituity/California Emergency Physicians, a group that contracts with hospitals to provide emergency-room physicians.

Responds Keegstra in turn, 'He can't inhale!'

Public corrective action was taken against Keegstra, ordering her to complete a professional boundaries course, among other things. "In my mind, I don't think she should be practicing medicine at all", he told Good Morning America.
