Rampant Russia on brink of last 16 after second-half blitz

Rampant Russia on brink of last 16 after second-half blitz

After the opening games saw Russia defeat Saudi Arabia 5-0 and Egypt lost 1-0 to Russia, Egypt went into the game knowing that the game as a must win.

Russian Federation pressed Egypt high up the pitch, forcing their opponents into mistakes, one of which gifted the hosts an early chance when Aleksandr Golovin dispossessed Tarek Hamed and fired a low shot just wide.

The comprehensive defeat of a Mohamed Salah-led Egypt, led by Dzyuba's towering presence at centre-forward, was also unexpected, but Russian Federation coach Stanislav Cherchesov said he knew Dzyuba could provide what his side needed on the day.

Their big game though would be the match with Egypt as they and the Africans were both expected to lose to Uruguay and beat the Saudis meaning the victor of their game would likely go through.

Dzyuba got in on the act with a fantastic turn and finish to send the crowd into raptures, though Zobnin's clumsy pull-back at least enabled Salah to get himself a World Cup goal soon after.

"Every player battled today in every area of the pitch".

Fresh from their opening day 5-0 win, Russian Federation can all but book their place in the knockout stages with a victory over Egypt on Tuesday evening.

Egypt midfielder Mohamed Elneny: "We all believe that we're able to beat them".

"We know Egypt's weakness and tactically speaking he was more fitting for the goal as a target man", Cherchesov said.

"Whether I should stay or not does not depend on me and we still have another match".

The country selected 11 host cities to be the venues for the matches of the 2018 World Cup and they are Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kazan, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Rostov-on-Don, Nizhny Novgorod, Yekaterinburg and Samara. No African side has played as many World Cup games without a win.

"Of course, he has a big influence on Egypt but the team is still 11 players, not one".

"To play in a World Cup and experience this atmosphere is a dream you hope will never end". Fernandes cut the ball back for Cheryshev to hit a first-time effort through the legs of El Shenawy to score his third of the tournament. The Over-Under on total goals scored in this 2018 World Cup match is 2.

A win for Uruguay over Saudi Arabia on Wednesday afternoon would see both the South Americans and the hosts go through with Egypt and the Saudis being knocked out with a game to go.

Aleksandr Golovin scored his first World Cup goal and registered two assists on his debut in the competition.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system proved its worth to give Egypt a glimmer of hope when referee Enrique Caceres had initially awarded a foul outside the box rather than a penalty when Salah was pulled by Zhirkov.
