Morocco lost out in the challenge at the FIFA Congress, Sportinglife.ng can report.

After months of speculation and competition with Morocco's bid, the joint "United 2026" bid of U.S., Canada and Mexico was awarded Wednesday with the hosting rights to the expanded 48-team World Cup in 2026.

The result at the FIFA Congress on the eve of the 2018 tournament means global football's showpiece event will return to the North American continent for the first time since the United States hosted it in 1994.

An FA spokesperson said: "We congratulate the USA, Canada and Mexico on winning the bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup".

"What can really be the legacy, whether we host matches or are just involved with this in some other grand scheme, that can make sure that Baltimore and the state of Maryland have maximized the potential of being a part of the World Cup?".

It will be the first time since 1994 that the US will have hosted the monthlong soccer extravaganza, and will come two years before Los Angeles welcomes back the 2028 Summer Olympics.

"FIFA could not provide a basic level of certainty on some major unknowns that put our city and taxpayers at risk".

Vancouver, which hosted the 2015 Women's World Cup final, will watch from the sidelines after the B.C. government cited concerns over the possible costs of being a host city.

Toronto, Montreal and Edmonton are all candidates cities for games at the tournament that will be hosted by Canada, the US and Mexico.

Brazil are the odds-on favourites to win their first World Cup since 2002 while defending champions Germany are also expected to go far in the tournament. We had more than a hundred referee decisions changed... Expect it to add a World Cup semifinal to its resume.

The hosts head into the tournament as the lowest-ranked team, having slipped to 70th in the Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings - three places below the Saudis.

The announcement was made on Wednesday morning at the 68th FIFA Congress, just one day before the opening of the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation.

Miami is a ideal city to host World Cup matches.

The U.S. has submitted 17 cities to host matches, but that list will be narrowed down to 10 by 2021. Canadian officials have already said that there is a movement to stage games in all three countries on the tournament's opening day, should the so-called United bid carry the day.
