North America to Hold the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Russian Federation has struggled in friendly competition ahead of the tournament, and is the lowest ranked squad participating in the 2018 World Cup, pegged at No. 70 going into Thursday's matchup at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Nashville was included in the 23 cities involved in the bid, meaning a World Cup game could be played in Music City. This will be a model for the future where nations can come together to co-host a 48-country World Cup.

To do so would have invited ridicule when it needed to build or renovate the 14 stadiums it wants to use - a task FIFA's technical report said "cannot be overstated".

U.S. venues include the Pasadena Rose Bowl in Los Angeles, venue for the 1994 World Cup final. American soccer officials downplayed the influence of politics on the bid.

Whitecaps president Bob Lenarduzzi expressed his disappointment that Vancouver will not be participating in the World Cup.

The United bid will, however, be of huge appeal to the Federation Internationale de Football Association bean-counters as the bid team claims the ability to generate a projected profit of more than £8 billion for the governing body.

TV Schedule: Coverage of the opening ceremony begins on RTÉ 2 from 3pm, with the game kicking off at 4pm.

Commercial hospitality is expected to generate $1-1.5 billion, while media revenues could exceed $5 billion for the first time.

The United States, Mexico and Canada will host soccer's biggest event in 2026.

Canada hosted the 24-team FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015, as well as the Under-20 World Cup in 2007.

Could England host a World Cup?

Despite the scepticism that initially surrounded the 1994 World Cup in the United States, the tournament was a runaway commercial and critical success.

- How will it work? The US proposed hosting 60 out of the 80 games in 2026. Football is known as soccer in the United States.

Mexico will host the matches in Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Monterrey. "Our cities are ready to host today". Venues for the United bid will be picked from existing stadiums or new ones under construction.
