Police sergeant rescues child from busy roadway

The Naperville Police Department said Monday that Sgt. Anthony Mannino was recently given the department's Life Saving Award for bringing the child to safety last month on the side of Route 59 outside of Chicago.

The sergeant pulled over and parked his squad auto to block traffic in the lane.

A heroic police officer rescued a child wandering in the middle of a highway in IL. At one point in the video, a large truck passes just a few feet from the boy, who appears to veer toward the center lane of traffic.

Sergeant Mannino quickly caught up to the boy and pulled him out of harm's way.

"I have twin boys, and there's not a day that goes by where something bad happens, you always think of your own kids", Mannino said. Mannino then alerts dispatch that he has him and would begin searching for his parents.

A post on the Naperville Police Department's Facebook page says the incident occurred last month when the 1-year-old boy managed to slip out of his house.

The boy's mother arrived moments after Mannino saved him, WGN reports.
