The Astana rider completed the route, which started in Frontenex, in a time of 3:34:11.

Team Sky also won the team event, finishing seven minutes, 18 seconds ahead of UAE Team Emirates.

Geraint Thomas survived a late scare to win the Criterium du Dauphine as Adam Yates of the Australian Mitchelton-Scott team won the final stage to consolidate second place.

Thomas, who had two punctures, ended the stage in fifth place, but the Welshman stayed one minute ahead of Yates in the general classification of what is the final warm-up race for the Tour de France.

Thomas managed to close the gap on the peloton within 15km, but was far from happy with the conduct of AG2R as he informed Romain Bardet when he caught up with the French rider.

The 32-year-old Thomas registered his first win at the Dauphine, probably the greatest success of his professional career, topping even his Paris-Nice victory in 2016.

Thomas now leads Yates by 1:29 in the overall standings.
