Series against Australia and India this summer should give England a clearer indication of how they are shaping up ahead of next year's World Cup on home soil, for which they are strong contenders.

"A one-off game like this, to bring your best game is very hard to do, they played well and deserved the result", said Morgan.

He said: "On the positive side we are better for the run we have had, it is better than having two days of training leading into a big series against Australia, so there are mistakes we made and hopefully we can learn from them". "You get to number one and people are going to want to beat you, but you want to be number one in the world".

It has been four months since I made the decision to focus exclusively on white-ball cricket, it is early days but, personally, I think it has gone OK so far.

Morgan, however, accepted they had been well below the standard needed to win in what was their first 50-over match of the British season.

We played well out in Australia and did well but that's in the past now, that's gone and we're looking forward to this series.

'We're delighted to be working with Cricket Scotland and to have Calum, Safyaan and Grant on board for our Vitality Blast campaign, ' said Derbyshire cricket advisor Kim Barnett.

"We didn't do enough to win, if we had won it would have been a bonus from where we were", added the former Ireland batsman.

A combination of a controversial umpiring decision - with no review system in place - and rain saw them just miss out in the qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe. "We've created an electric atmosphere and it's something we need to do more".

The No. 13 side, Scotland, coming off heartbreak at the World Cup qualifiers produced a world-class performance to defeat the top-ranked England in a nail-bitter at Edinburgh on Sunday. That is the bigger shop window rather than personal side of it.

"It was a really interesting game yesterday, good for us that England lost that game, great for Scotland as a country, and as a cricketing nation, it's really exciting for them", Ashton Agar told reporters on Monday. It would be nice to play a few more games like this.

That should take nothing away from a Scotland side still bristling from their desperately unlucky failure to qualify for the World Cup and eager to prove they belong at cricket's top table.

That's what they will go out and try to achieve against the top team in the world, with the playing XI for the England game all available to choose from.
