North Korea lifts the veil, telling residents about 'historic' Trump-Kim summit

It is also unclear whether USA officials will raise human rights issues in meetings with the North Koreans. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the delegations were "rapidly" making progress, but it will come down to the meeting between the two leaders. Kim spent the day mostly out of view _ until he left his hotel for a late-night tour of Singapore sights, including the Flower Dome at Gardens by the Bay, billed as the world's biggest glass greenhouse.

Following an on-camera greeting, the pair will begin the summit with a one-on-one meeting with only their translators, according to a senior Trump administration official.

Sanctions will remain until North Korea completely and verifiably eliminates its weapons of mass destruction programs, added Pompeo.

For President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, it will be the first such meeting between a sitting U.S. president and a current North Korean leader.

Trump initially touted the potential for a grand bargain with North Korea to rid itself of a nuclear missile programme that has advanced rapidly to threaten the United States, insisting he would swiftly achieve what previous USA administrations have failed to do.

With cameras of the world's press trained on them, Trump and Kim built an initial atmosphere of friendship.

On Monday morning, KCNA reported that Mr Kim had met with Singaporean prime minister Lee Hsien Loong ahead of talks with Mr Trump on Tuesday. Again accusing the longtime United States ally of unfair trade practices, Trump added: "Then Justin acts hurt when called out!"

Trump's early exit will be his second from a summit in just a few days.

The discussions between the United States and North Korea are ongoing and have moved more quickly than expected.

In a post on Twitter during his flight, Trump reiterated his optimism that the summit with the North Korean leader will be a success.

Choe, a vice foreign minister, is the highest-level female diplomat in North Korea.

As the site for their meeting, the two leaders have chosen one of Singapore's most luxurious hotels, the Capella Resort on Sentosa Island, a popular vacation spot off the southern tip of Singapore and home to Universal Studios Singapore. Meanwhile, Mr Kim has called Mr Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard".

It's so far unclear whether the US and North Korea will release some kind of joint statement or agreement following the sit-down.

The rapid improvement in relations between the North and South Korea - technically still at war - culminated with a historic leaders' summit in April.
